About the Show
“At once magical and alchemical and scientific, I offer you the perfect imperfection of the plant world. This brand new body of work – brought here by many forces. Effectively a culmination of all of the elements of my own art history; and of the combination of elements that creates germination, rooting, and growth. Combine the elements and you get the right circumstances for plants to thrive. That’s pretty much all you need. Good soil (earth), air, sunlight (fire), and water.
As oxygen breathers, as exhalers of carbon dioxide, we are entirely intertwined with plants. We focus on the plants and parts that we ingest. The roots, leaves, seeds, or flowers are our food, beauty, medicine, and poison. Yet the whole plant is important. Each cell and layer from the ground up and down. Without the leaves the carrot will not grow, without the root the lettuce leaves cannot exist. Each root draws life from the soil – creating and maintaining our magical lives with air, food, shelter. We have roots in our families and communities and thrive with the same elements as plants.
With line and color, texture that is both visual and spatial, this work has taught me about material and subject. These paintings include powdered glass from street striping, and many thin layers of acrylic paint. They have taught me about letting the natural flow of life lead to art. About letting the garden grow itself, letting the seeds do their jobs. I have relearned to combine the elements to create sustenance and been inspired to let things emerge in their own time.
In these paintings I hope you find nourishment, textural enrichment, delicious entanglement in growth, beautiful and vitamin rich love for plants – for life. Please think about the sunlight in each leaf, the elements that make these plants so important. I hope what emerges from this connection sustains you. I hope you find joy in the line of root, of stalk, in rich colors of earth, in the structure of leaves, the light in the curves and hollows of each part of the gorgeous plants we share the world with.”
