Microforms

New Works by Garry Hood

Artist’s Statement

Every time I start a work, I want to surprise myself, put pen to paper and let the drawing take on a life of its own. I like to be able to sense or see that something is evolving, that every addition to the drawing is sending things in a different direction.

What comes out is abstract, usually composed of imaginary forms, floating, overlapping, intertwined, organic or mechanical or geometric, often kinetic. These forms probably come out of my childhood. In grade school I wanted to be a scientist. I had a chemistry set, a microscope, a telescope, and I read a lot of science fiction. I also grew up with deaf parents and American Sign Language– a language of show and tell, of forms and movements that you make with your two hands and your face.

I draw everything with a single, black ink pen. I may not always do it that way, but right now I really like that I can do what I do with just one pen.

About Garry Hood

A native Portlander, Garry Hood grew up with deaf parents, bilingual in American Sign Language, a language of images and animation. As a child, he developed a keen interest in science, microscopes, telescopes, and chemistry sets. By high school he was immersed in science fiction novels, and by college, literature, writing, and film making. He started really drawing by doodling during History of Western Civ lectures his Freshman year. The doodles got bigger and more elaborate and led to ink drawings (the nascent roots of his current work), which he exhibited in Portland area galleries, including the cooperatively-run Eleventh Muse Gallery, where he was one of the founders. Garry co-founded the Northwest Media Project, making his own short films as well as editing and acting as cinematographer on other film productions. His film work includes editing and interpreting on ‘Deafula’, the first feature length motion picture produced in American Sign Language.

After a long hiatus from drawing to pursue his interests in film, founding his own company, and raising a family, Garry has returned to his artist roots and for the last several years has devoted all of his artistic energy to his drawings. Garry currently lives in Portland with his wife and teenage daughter.
