Jennifer Mercede
May 4th - 29th, 2007
Jennifer Mercede is one of the most ambitious artists we’ve encountered here at Launch Pad and perfectly exemplifies the type of artist we aim to support: She participates actively in the local art community, regularly taking part in group shows here and at other emerging galleries and always checking out the scene on First and Last Thursday, she engages the public with her art in diverse ways, collaborating on the “Share the Road” Mural on upper Hawthorne and teaching art at after-school classes at Buckman; she creates a living for herself by showing her work in alternative spaces such as wine stores, coffee shops and kids clothing boutiques and compares notes on the business of being a full-time artist as part of a women’s art marketing group that she co-founded.
Mercede’s spontaneous, colorful and playful work has consistently flown out the door during group shows at Launch Pad, but we felt that the size restrictions of a salon-style show didn’t do Mercede’s work justice and we wondered what she would do with a show all to herself. Now, after over a year of working with her and watching her refine and master her craft, It is our distinct pleasure to work with her on her first solo gallery show. Mercede will fill the gallery with a series of dramatic 4′ x 4′ mixed-media panels, along with a smattering of smaller works for beginning collectors, and she has enthusiastically agreed to offer one of her smaller works as a raffle prize to benefit p:ear.
Afterward:
Jennifer’s show was a smash hit! The opening was a roaring dance party, the raffle raised $110.00 for p:ear, and she sold over 2/3 of her show! As well, her work was featured in PDX Magazine and the Willamette Week Finder! And her work has been picked up for representation by Heidi McBride!
You can find more information about Jennifer’s upcoming shows on her website, as well as contact her about purchasing work.
